How Does Pad Printing Work?

Pad printing is one of the special printing methods. It can print all kinds of characters and pictures on the irregular surface of products. And it can print with one color or more than two colors. The process is relatively simple because it can print successfully at one time without any other technology. Now the application of the pad printing is very common. For example, it is used to create our everyday objects, such as printing cups, keyboards and pens and so on. At the same time, the surface of various electronic products is done by pad printing. Therefore, today we are going to introduce its related knowledge, hoping that you can learn something from that.

How to Do the Surface Finish of Aluminium Alloy Prototype?

Development of Pad Printing

Pad printing first appeared in Europe and was used for printing watches dial. It was introduced to China in the 1980s. Because pad printing can print products with small area and irregular concave, it has great advantages. With the continuous development of Chinese manufacturing industries, the application of pad printing technology is more and more widespread. The proportion of surface printing using pad printing technology for electronic products, toys, plastics and other products accounts for about 50%.

Development of Pad Printing Ink

The ink used in pad printing appeared before 2000. And China was the first country to use the pad printing ink. In fact, the ink was used as early as the Western Han Dynasty. And this kind of ink can be written on bamboo slips. Some of its substances are the same as the present ink. The invention of movable-type printing in the Northern Song Dynasty improved the efficiency of ink use. Germans in the 15th century used soot and linseed oil to make the modern ink. In the 19th century, with the development of various dyes, ink of various colors can be made as well.

Working Principle of Pad Printing

Pad printing is based on the principle of imaging. First, the ink is coated on the etching board and a telescopic scraper scrapes off the excess ink. The remaining ink will remain in the etching board pit. The pad printing head made of silica gel will stick the ink in the concave to the surface of the pad printing head, and then press the ink on the surface of the product that needs to be printed. After that, the concave will appear graphics and text on the board. It is worth noting that the contents of the transferred pictures need to be etched on the steel plate first. After cleaning the steel plate and evenly coating it with a layer of photosensitive glue, the printed film with pictures and texts should be pasted. Exposure to ultraviolet light can harden the text-free area. Developing water is used to wash the picture and text on the film to make them appear on the steel plate. And the corrosion solution should be poured into the film so that the depth of the picture and text on the steel plate does not exceed 0.5 mm. Laser can also be used directly to etch the pictures and texts on the steel plate.
