MT and SPI standard textures

Mold texture is a common process of mold surface finishing, which directly affects the appearance and surface strength of the product. Mold texture, also known as mold texturing, mold engraving and mold etching, has been widely used because of its low cost, rich surface effect and fast processing speed.

Texture is typically called out using a set of industry standards such as SPI or Mold Tech (MT) finishes, we also use YS (Yick Sang texture standard) or other local standards in China. SPI finish is a requirement for mold surface finishes and is typically used for calling out the degree of polish you want on a surface. MT finishes are typically used when you want a texture on a surface.

Textures can be created in the mold tooling using a chemical etch process, bead blasting or other mechanical means. Etching gives generally a more durable handling finish as the plateaus provide more bearing area meaning the wear reduces the height rather than the area. For spark eroded and blasted finishes the tips are rounded so any wear flattens these off giving a noticeable change in appearance.
